Community Inclusion

[I] make no pretense of being the last word on the subject of autistic children. …more appropriate to call it one of the first words.

— Rosalind Oppenheim, Founder of Rimland

We take steps to engage and develop the whole person through interaction with his or her community in memorable and meaningful ways. Rimland is honored to have received in-kind support from many organizations and venues, which allow our residents to pursue their interests.

Over the past few years, in-kind ticket donations have helped our residents enjoy major sporting events, with trips to see the Chicago White Sox, Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, Wolves and Rush, as well as arts and entertainment such as a Northlight Theatre production, Blue Man Group, and a Cirque Shanghai show.

Many of our residents have visited the YMCA and LA Fitness to use their facilities. They look forward to Rimland’s participation in the Special Olympics each year, which motivates them to exercise and keep active. We’re proud to report that in 2012 for the first time one of our residents participated in the state games, where she competed in 100m speed walking. More recently, our residents have participated in the Special Olympics for bowling, swimming, and track & field

Our clients also attend seasonal community festivals such as Taste of Chicago and movies in the park, and visits to the Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium, Chicago Botanic Garden, and Shedd Aquarium.

In addition, we venture forth lunches on the beach or barbecues, or simple but satisfying trips to the grocery store or beauty salon.

If you or your organization  would like to donate tickets to events or otherwise assist our ventures in to the community, please contact us.
