The First Annual Visionary Outsider Art Show
As part of the organization’s 45th anniversary celebration, Rimland presented its first annual Visionary Outsider Art Show on Saturday October 15. Guests viewed 22 works of art by highly individualistic artists – self-defined as raw, marginalized, outsider, self-taught, visionary, or naïve, including artists who face physical or cognitive challenges.
Guests at the show had the opportunity to be mystified by the sleight of hand of magicians and attorneys Mel Siegel and Fred Lane, a/k/a the Great Fredini. (At 91 years old, Fred Lane still practices law and delights audiences with his prestidigitations!)
Guests also witnessed a performance of the group Mother-Daughter Tribal, who performed American Tribal Style belly dance. All told, Nine pieces of art were sold, with proceeds benefiting the artists and Rimland. Thanks to all who viewed and purchased art. We’ll see you next year!
Our 45th Anniversary Benefit Bash!
On October 14 Rimland clients, family members, staff, friends, and supporters came together at Rimland’s headquarters to celebrate the organization’s 45th anniversary.
Festivities included a preview of the first annual Visionary Outsider Art Show, a wine pull, a new video about Rimland’s history and programs, upbeat jazz standards by the David Jennings Trio, and a beautifully catered menu of tasty delights.
Master of Ceremonies Judy Hsu (of ABC 7) hosted the evening’s program with skill and humor.
Rimland CEO Pamela Watson offered words of welcome and gratitude to the attendees, and board member Bill Egan charted the organization’s development over 45 years and shared stories from Rimland’s history.
Also during the program, Rimland bestowed special recognition on three of the organization’s most faithful associates for their longtime partnership and service: Ann Moltz, a Rimland parent and volunteer who directs Rimland’s art program; Dave Work, a Rimland employee since 1975; and community development partner Lycrecia Parks, Director of Portfolio Management at the Chicago Community Loan Fund.
And a good time was had by all!
Ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille
Amid the fun and games at Friday’s Anniversary Benefit, we’ll be unveiling a new video that tells Rimland’s story and celebrates our 45 years of service. Here are some behind-the-scenes moments from the video shoot with videographers Crisanti and Co. and Board President Lorraine Ganz as she prepares for the video shoot. As you can see, Mrs. Ganz is ready for her close-up!

Rimland Services is sponsoring a Visionary Outsider Art Show to bring awareness of adults living with autism and to the truth that human potential for creativity and artistic expression is not limited by physical or cognitive challenges. The artists in this show are highly individualistic – whether self-defined as raw, marginalized, outsider, self-taught, visionary, or naïve. The Visionary Outsider Art Show will showcase the work of eight artists from six states whose works will all be for sale.*
Michael Banks – Widely recognized and exhibited outsider artist experiments with both found objects, building materials as well as artists’ materials. (Alabama)
Tarik Echols – Obsessive marks extracted from a single written word or phrase result in complex relationships between words and background space. (Illinois)
Ritchie Exilas – Resources for Human Development-RI artist who works with pencils and markers in a bold yet whimsical style. (Rhode Island)
Joe Flasch – Prolific artist who has developed a collection of symbols which function like pictograms. (Illinois)
Harold Jeffries – Little City Foundation artist creating blueprinted plans for Heaven. (Illinois)
Bill Miller – Collage artist who uses vintage linoleum for pictorial assemblages of memory and nature lie somewhere between collage and stained glass. (Pennsylvania)
P Miller – Military veteran whose “doodles” offset the demands of daily life (Nebraska)
Sarah Rakes – Rural painter whose works exude a concern with living things and a love for animals, highly patterned backgrounds spill over onto the frames she creates for each work. (Georgia)
Rimland Art Selection Committee member Cleo Wilson, said she was pleased with the depth and breadth of the submissions to the show. The Committee introduced key elements of the show. We are indebted to these outstanding individuals:
Rebecca Hoffberger – Founder/Director of the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore, MD, an official national museum, education center, and repository for intuitive, self-taught artistry
Pam Horowitz – The Pamela S. Horowitz & H. Julian Bond Outsider Art Collection, Washington, DC
Judith Joseph – Chicago North Shore artist & arts educator
Larry Singer – Director, Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy, Loyola University of Chicago School of Law
Cleo Wilson – President, Intuit, the Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, and collector of self-taught art

Caught in the Act (of Kindness)
We spotted three of our wonderful volunteers creating centerpieces for Rimland 45th Anniversary Benefit: Maggie Wilson of Evanston, Nancy Bloch of Glencoe, and Sharon Sanders of Northbrook. Ms. Wilson organized a group of Unitarians who are helping to transform Rimland’s headquarters into an art gallery and party venue for the 45th Anniversary Benefit on October 14th and the Visionary Outsider Art Show on 15th. Attendees at the benefit will have advance opportunities to purchase art from the art show. Thank you, Maggie, Nancy, and Sharon!
